The Ukrainian parliament has allowed border officers to use weapons and military equipment, the Interfax-Ukraine agency reported. The regulations were backed up during Thursday’s meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.
The provisions of the Act allow the use of firearms, inter alia, to repel an attack on a soldier or employee of the State Border Guard Service in the event of a threat to his life or health, protection against attack, release of hostages or persons unlawfully deprived of liberty. The weapon can also be used to repel an attack on protected objects, as well as to stop a person trying to escape who has committed a serious crime, Interfax reported.
In addition, border guards will be able to use firearms to stop a vehicle if the driver of his actions poses a threat to human life or health, or to stop an unmanned aircraft flying in the border strip, over or near Ukrainian ships, boats and auxiliary units of the border service.
The regulations were created during the tense situation at Ukrainian borders, where Russia will assemble its troops. As noted by the depo.ua portal, this document is not related to the migration crisis in Belarus, it was adopted at first reading on September 22, and it was submitted to the parliament in March 2021.
An announcement of the exercise
On Thursday, the Ukrainian police informed that exercises with the participation of all power structures, territorial defense and civic formations are to be held soon in the Rivne region (near the border with Belarus).
On Wednesday, a meeting was held in the city of Varash (Rivne Oblast), chaired by the Chief of Police, Ihor Klymenko, on the situation on the border between Ukraine and Belarus. The border guard assured that the situation is now under control, the border defense is being strengthened and its tightness increased.
Kymienko called on the inhabitants of border territories to report to the police “suspicious persons” staying in their localities. “Our common goal is to prevent the migration crisis and mass riots,” he said.
The rapid response brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine announced on Facebook that it had sent its forces to the west of the country to defend the border.
The border between Ukraine and Belarus is over a thousand kilometers long.
