Intelligence Update: Fierce Fighting Around the City of Kreminna

Also on Saturday, the British Ministry of Defense in its daily intelligence update said that in the run-up to Eastern Rite Christmas, celebrated on January 7, the fiercest fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops took place near the town of Kreminna in the Luhansk region.

“Over the last three weeks, fighting around Kreminna has been concentrated in a heavily wooded area to the west of the city. Since coniferous forests provide some cover from aerial observation even in winter, both sides most likely have problems with fine-tuning artillery fire. In the case of operations in the forests, combat largely boils down to infantry clashes, often at close range.

It added that Russian commanders most likely perceive the fighting near Kreminna as a threat to the right flank of the section of the front near Bakhmut, which they consider crucial for a future advance to capture the rest of the Donetsk region.
