The Security Service of Ukraine announced the detection of corruption involving the misappropriation of approximately 1.5 billion hryvnias (approximately USD 40 million) intended from the state budget for the purchase of ammunition for the Ukrainian army. The suspects include employees of the Ministry of Defense and the heads of an arms company.

Investigators found that in August 2022, employees of the Ministry of Defense concluded a contract for the purchase of ammunition with the supplier Lviv Arsenal. After receiving the entire amount from the ministry, the company transferred part of the money to the account of the foreign entity that was supposed to deliver it Ukraine ammunition.

However, the company did not send a single missile and redirected the received funds to the accounts of a related structure in the Balkans, we read in a statement published by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Saturday evening. The rest of the money from the ministry was on the accounts of the Ukrainian company in a bank in Kiev.

The funds were to be used to purchase 100,000 pieces of mortar ammunition for the Ukrainian army.

Five people who, according to investigators, were involved in the procedure were informed about the possibility of committing a crime. One of them was detained while trying to leave Ukraine. They face up to 12 years in prison and confiscation of their property. The stolen money was seized and is to be returned to the state budget.
