Escape from house arrest

After the outbreak of Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Medvedchuk – accused by Kiev of high treason – escaped from house arrest, where he was arrested on suspicion of high treason and attempted theft of raw materials in the Crimea annexed by Russia. The prosecutor’s office in Kiev also suspected him of “financing terrorism” in connection with illegal coal supplies from the separatist republics in Donbass in 2014 and 2015.

In mid-April, Medvedchuk was caught. A few months later, the authorities in Kiev released him as part of an exchange for Ukrainian defenders detained by the Russians.

Medvedchuk was one of the richest politicians in Ukraine. In 2019, Forbes magazine estimated his wealth at $620 million.
