Ukraine, visit of the US president. Joe Biden: Kiev has taken over a part of my heart

US President Joe Biden, after leaving the Ukrainian capital, published a short tweet in which he said that “Kiev has taken over a part of his heart.” He added that he was sure he would “go back there again”. He also attached a photo of the entry he left in the guest book of the Mariinsky Palace, the official residence of the President of Ukraine.

President Joe Biden made an unannounced and risky visit to Kiev on Monday. There he met, among others, the president Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The President of the United States signed the guest book of the Mariinsky Palace, the official residence of the President of Ukraine.

“I am honored to be welcomed back to Kiev. We stand in solidarity and friendship with the Ukrainian people who love freedom,” the American president wrote in it. Joe Biden assured of his “deepest respect” for President Zelensky – his leadership and courage. The entry in the guest book ended in Ukrainian with the words “Slava Ukraini” (Ukrainian: glory to Ukraine).

It was the photo of this entry that was published on the president’s profile USA. The politician added two sentences of comment to the photo: Kiev has taken over a part of my heart. I knew I would come back here.

“Putin thought Ukraine was weak, the West was divided”

Soon after, another entry was posted on Joe Biden’s official account. The American leader wrote that (Vladimir Putin believed that Ukraine was weak and the West divided:

“He thought he would survive longer than us. But he was wrong. One year (after the outbreak of the war – ed.) we are together, united with the Ukrainian nation,” wrote the president.

Visit to Kiev

The visit to Kiev started around 8 am local time (9 am in Poland), but was kept secret until the last moment. American media provide unofficial information that Biden flew to Poland by plane and then changed to a train.

Around 8.30 am, Biden arrived at the Mariinsky Palace – the presidential residence. The president greeted him there Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena. In the Palace, the leaders conversed with members of their respective administrations.

The first videos showing Biden and Zelensky were posted on social media around 10.35am. At that time, alarm sirens wailed in Kiev, warning of possible shelling. The recordings show both presidents at St. Michael’s Square in the Ukrainian capital, where they laid wreaths at a plaque commemorating fallen soldiers.
