The oldest auxiliary ship in the Russian Navy, Kommuna, was reportedly damaged in an attack that took place on Sunday in Russian-occupied Sevastopol in Crimea. The unit dates back to the times of the Russian Empire and was built over a hundred years ago, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II.

The head of the Sevastopol occupation authorities, Mikhail Razvozaev, announced that Russian forces repelled the missile attack, but falling fragments of the missile caused a fire on one of the ships. He assured that the fire was quickly extinguished.

According to the Krymsky Vetier channel on Telegram, it is a submarine rescue unit Kommuna – the oldest auxiliary ship of the Russian Navy, commissioned in 1915, i.e. at the end of the existence of the Russian Empire, during the times of Tsar Nicholas II. The ship was originally called “Volkhov”, but after the Russian Revolution it was renamed “Commune” to commemorate the Paris Commune of 1871.

The spokesman of the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, stated that similar incidents at the infrastructure facilities of Russian forces in occupied Crimea will be repeated.

Kommuna, which is part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is – as emphasized by the Ukrainian portal Hromadske – the world's oldest ship at the disposal of naval forces and performing combat tasks. In terms of design, it is a catamaran.

Attacks in annexed Crimea

Starting from August 2022, explosions have been regularly reported in Crimea. In the case of Ukrainian attacks using missiles and drones, the Russian occupation administration usually reports that the explosions are allegedly the result of anti-aircraft defense operations or the effective destruction of incoming drones.

The Ukrainian side is increasingly admitting to these operations – for example, it confirmed that representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) took part in the attacks on the bridge to Crimea in October 2022 and July 2023. In September last year, the authorities in Kiev admitted, among other things, to shell the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol and the shipyards in that city.

The Crimean Peninsula was annexed by Russia in March 2014 as a result of military intervention and an illegal referendum. Ukraine and the West considered these actions by the Kremlin a violation of international law.
