The U.S. Energy Ministry warned in a letter to Rosatom, the Russian state-owned corporation of nuclear energy companies, to stay away from U.S. technology and technical data at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. The news was reported by CNN television. The technology was to be subject to export controls and help make the plant safer.

As reported by CNN, the Department of Energy said in a March 17 letter to a Russian nuclear operator that the Russian-occupied power plant contains “U.S.-origin nuclear technical data” that is subject to export controls and U.S. law prohibits possession, control, access and copying such data and technologies by unauthorized persons.

The Ministry of Energy confirmed the authenticity of the letter. It is not clear whether the Russians responded to the letter. The TV also does not specify what data and technology it is about. However, it notes that in 2021, the Department of Energy reported on the assistance provided to the Ukrainian power plant in implementing “new procedures for maintenance and operation of the reactor, which should ultimately strengthen energy security.”

John Kirby, National Security Council Spokesperson: This Must Stop

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told television that the warning was related to concerns about the safety of the plant. “There is no reason for Russian forces to be there. This must end. We want to ensure that (the plant) remains safe. And that warning … must be seen in this context, Kirby said. At the same time, he added that no increased radioactivity or leakage of hazardous materials from the plants has been noticed so far.

The Zaporozhian Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
