The Russian amphibious assault ship Olenigorskiy Gorniak, which was attacked on the night of Thursday to Friday, suffered very serious damage, Andriy Yusov from the Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) said. The Ukrainians attacked the ship near the base of the Black Sea Fleet in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea.
Andriy Yusov assessed that returning the Olenegogorskiy Gorniak to service in the near future would be a “difficult task”. He stressed that damage from Friday’s attack would make it unusable in the near future. – The enemy cannot feel safe anywhere, neither on land nor on water. The situation will change only when the Russians leave our territory and independence Ukraine will be restored,” Yusov said.
Successful Ukrainian operation
Olenigorskiy Gorniak was attacked on the night from Thursday to Friday. Photos of the ship listed 30-40 degrees suggest that several watertight compartments were flooded or the crew failed to control the damage, the British Ministry of Defense said earlier on Saturday.
The 113-meter vessel is the largest Russian warship that has been seriously damaged or destroyed since the sinking of the Moscow missile cruiser, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, by Ukrainian troops on April 13, 2022.
Captured moment of attack
A video recording of a successful attack on a Russian ship carried out on the night of Thursday to Friday has appeared on the web. “The recording shows an SBU water drone loaded with 450 kilograms of TNT attacking an enemy ship with about 100 crew members,” Ukrainian Pravda wrote.
The video shows the vessel approaching the Russian ship. When it reaches the side, the picture breaks off.
It was built in Gdańsk
Krasnodar Krai, where Novorossiysk is located, said on Friday morning that there were “no casualties or injuries” as a result of the Ukrainian attack. They also reported that the landing craft Olenigorskiy Gorniak “participated in repelling the attack.”
Olenegogorskij Gorniak (BDK-91) is one of the large project 775 amphibious assault ships (in the code FOR THIS: Toad). These units were designed in Poland and built by the Northern Shipyard in Gdańsk. 28 ships were built, all for the Navy of the Soviet Union. Production ran from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. Olenegogorskij Gorniak was commissioned in 1976.
