Three out of eleven Ukrainian prisoners of war of Hungarian descent, released from captivity in Russia and taken to Hungary without our knowledge, have already returned to their homeland. We are taking steps to bring the remaining people from there as well, Oleh Nikolenko, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said on Tuesday.
This operation is carried out mainly by our embassy in Budapest, added a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by the Ukrainska Pravda portal.
Ukrainian prisoners of war who were released from Russian captivity in mysterious circumstances and transported to Hungaryare currently under supervision and have limited contact with loved ones. Our citizens have been interned by the Hungarian side, a representative of military intelligence announced earlier on Tuesday Ukraine (HUR) Andriy Yusov.
Prisoners are “in isolation”
In the previous days, the foreign ministry in Kiev emphasized that it wanted its consul to have access to 11 prisoners of war transported from Russia without the knowledge of the Ukrainian side and being “isolated” in Hungary. In the opinion of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, Budapest’s actions were motivated by political goals. The minister assessed that the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán he wanted to take advantage of the Hungarian origin of the Ukrainian soldiers and – thanks to their release – present himself as the “only defender” of all Hungarians.
– The Hungarian authorities should explain their involvement in bringing Ukrainian prisoners of war from Russia, as well as the actions of Budapest regarding communication with Kiev on this matter, European Commission spokesman for foreign affairs Peter Stano said on Monday.
