Antonio Guterres sent a letter to Vladimir Putin proposing to further facilitate Russian food and fertilizer exports. The UN secretary-general also wants to ensure the continuity of Ukrainian grain supplies through the Black Sea.

A spokesman made the announcement on Wednesday UN Stephane Dujarric. “The goal is to remove obstacles affecting financial transactions through the Russian Agricultural Bank, which is a major concern of the Russian Federation, while allowing the continued flow of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea,” Dujarric said.

Concerns about the future of the grain deal

It expires on Monday grain dealguaranteeing safe export of grain and fertilizers from Ukraine across the Black Sea, concluded in July 2022 by Ukraine, RussiaTurkey and the United Nations.

This agreement has already been extended several times, however Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated on July 4 that it “does not see the possibility of continuing this initiative.”
