New members will replace Ecuador, Japan, MaltaMozambique i Switzerlandwhich they will sit on the Security Council until the end of this year.

According to sources UN in a secret ballot, the newly elected countries secured the required two-thirds majority of member states present and voting in the General Assembly with 193 members. The term of office of the five remaining non-permanent members of the Security Council ends in 2025.

Although fundamental matters are ultimately decided on the Security Council by the U.S., which has veto power, China, Russia, France i Great Britain the vote of the majority of the rest also counts to push through the adopted resolutions.

UN Security Council. Pakistan was selected

Among the newly elected members of the Security Council Pakistan has traditionally had close relations with Russia, dating back to Soviet times. Defense and trade ties between the two countries have strengthened in recent years. Pakistan largely took a neutral position regarding the war on Ukraine, avoiding direct condemnation of Russia. At the same time, however, he expressed support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Pakistan maintains close relations, including military and economic cooperation, with China.

Of the Security Council members departing this year, Japan stands with Ukraine and supports a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The country's relations with Russia continue to be tense due to decades-long disputes over territories, especially about the Kuril Islands.

War in Ukraine. Switzerland remained neutral

Switzerland condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called for respect for international law. It also accepted the sanctions imposed by European Union, while maintaining the neutrality of his country. It provides humanitarian aid to war-affected Ukrainians, but cannot deliver weapons or ammunition.

Malta strongly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine, which was appreciated by Kiev. Mozambique takes a neutral position on the conflict. President Filipe Nyusi emphasizes dialogue instead of war.

Ecuador, on the other hand, focuses mainly on regional issues in Latin America.
