“Uncivilized gesture” of a tourist in Pompeii

A tourist was detained in the archaeological park of Pompeii on Saturday after trying to carve his name on the wall of one of the ancient houses with a sharp object. – This is an uncivilized gesture – commented the park's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

A tourist from Kazakhstan was detained by security and then handed over to the Carabinieri, the Ansa news agency reported. The team of conservators immediately began to assess the scale of damage he had caused to the wall of the well-preserved Ceii family home, decorated with paintings.

The director of the park in Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, stated that thanks to the new law, adopted on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, the perpetrator of the damage will have to pay for the renovation of the wall. He described the man's behavior as an “uncivilized gesture”.

Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, upon hearing about the incident, declared that it was another “barbaric and idiotic gesture of vandalism against our artistic and cultural heritage.”

– This is a very serious act that will be severely punished – emphasized the head of the ministry. He thanked the law enforcement forces for their quick intervention.
