Heavy rain on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday caused flooding in northern England. The roads were under water. Due to difficult weather conditions, numerous railway connections were also canceled.
Roads were flooded, including in Manchester. So much water accumulated on the streets that driving became impossible and some drivers abandoned their cars. Some buildings were also flooded.
TransPennine Express announced that train services between Huddersfield and Leeds were suspended until the end of the day. Previously, disruptions, with delays and cancellations, occurred on routes to York, Scarborough, Kingston upon Hull and Cleethorpes.
There are more than 30 flood warnings in force across Yorkshire on New Year's Day. Because the water level is high, the services appealed for special caution when walking near rivers.
Meteorologists no longer predict heavy rainfall in areas affected by flooding. On Wednesday evening, heavy rain is expected in the southern part of England, but it is not expected to cause flooding.
