Violent storms and tornadoes swept through several states located in the central part of the USA. At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured. The balance may still not be final. Some people were trapped in collapsed houses.

Strong ones passed through the central and eastern part of the United States storms. Hail, gusty winds and tornadoes were reported in many regions, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported. In total, at least 10 dead were counted – earlier on Saturday there were rumors of four fatalities.

Tornado fatalities

More than 50 tornadoes swept through at least seven states on Friday, including Arkansas, where five people were killed. Four people were killed in the small town of Wynne and another in North Little Rock, local officials said.

Three people died in Indiana near Sullivan. In Madison County, Alabama, one person died and five were injured. In Pontotoc County, Mississippi, one person died and four were injured.

Initial reports indicate that at least 22 tornadoes have been recorded in Illinois, eight in Iowa, four in Tennessee, five in Wisconsin and several in Mississippi.

Disastrous tornado in Little Rock

A devastating tornado hit the Arkansas state capital, Little Rock, on Friday afternoon. Recordings show a whirlwind several meters wide that tore off roofs, hijacked cars and damaged hundreds of buildings in the city. The NWS described the phenomenon as “catastrophic”. Hospitals in the region declared a state of emergency due to the number of injured who came to them after the element hit.

William Williams, a Little Rock supermarket employee, told CNN he was “grateful to be alive”. The man took shelter in the store when the tornado hit. – Everything happened in about five seconds. It came and it was boom – he reported. “I go outside and what I see is crazy. People had blood on their faces. I am grateful to be alive,” he added.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the extreme weather contributed to the deaths of four people in the eastern town of Wynne. There, houses and buildings were literally wiped off the face of the earth. “The city was cut in half from east to west,” Wynne Mayor Jennifer Hobbs told CNN.

At least 50 injured people were taken to a local hospital, Pulaski County spokeswoman Madeline Roberts said.

Five people were hospitalized after a tornado hit Covington, Tennessee on Friday. The element destroyed everything in its path, the roads were impassable.

“Utter Chaos”

Storms also raged in other states. Authorities suspect strong winds caused the roof of the Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois to collapse. There was a concert in the building. According to the emergency services, at least one person died and 28 were injured, five of them seriously.

“It was chaos, complete chaos,” Shane Woody of the Belvidere Police Department told CBS.

Tornadoes were also reported from Iowa. The element passed through the city of Keota, where it was immortalized by storm chasers.

According to PowerOutage.us, over 450,000 homes and businesses were without power on Friday evening and Saturday morning in Indiana, Illinois, Arkansas and Tennessee, with about a third of the outages reported in Indiana.
