Parts of the United States remain paralyzed by heavy snowfall. On Sunday morning, winter weather alerts covered areas inhabited by over two million people. Snow trapped residents in several counties and made roads impassable.

On Sunday, parts of the northeastern United States faced traffic paralysis. They moved over the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan zones of intense snowfall related to the lake effect – it occurs when cold, dry air moves over warmer waters. Due to the temperature difference, the air cools down, resulting in sudden shocks storms snowy.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued weather warnings for areas with more than two million people. Local NWS forecasters predicted more than 70 centimeters of snow on Sunday.

Cars buried in snow

On Saturday, heavy snowfall was the biggest disruption for residents of New York and Pennsylvania. During the day, a thick layer of snow accumulated in places, mainly along Interstate 90. Road crews tried to remove the accumulated snow, but not all routes were cleared in time.

In the Portland area, New York State Police reported miles of traffic jams and provided drivers with food and drinks. The officers also found a man who was taking his wife for a heart transplant surgery. Their car got stuck in a snowdrift, but thanks to the help of the police, the patient got to the hospital on time.

In Pennsylvania, most snow fell in Erie County. The center of the county capital was completely deserted as residents were unable to get out of their homes. Those who decided to drive in dangerous conditions had to prepare for traffic jams and huge difficulties. Temporary shelters were set up along the roads where travelers could warm up and rest.

– I try not to think that I can't leave the house and focus on what I have – said one of the county's residents.

Heavy snowfall is likely to hit the northeastern United States through Tuesday, according to forecasts. In Erie County, snow depths may reach more than 40 inches.
