Summer temperatures hit the central United States on Tuesday. In Phoenix, the state capital of Arizona, thermometers showed a record 37 degrees Celsius – usually such a temperature is expected in early May. Scientists warn that rapid warming could be dangerous to health.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix, Arizona reported on Tuesday that it was a record hot day. At 4 p.m. local time, thermometers in the city showed 99 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37.2 degrees Celsius – such a warm April 11 has not yet been recorded there. As explained by Erinanne M. Saffelle, Arizona state climatologist, the region is currently in a transitional season before summer begins.

“As we transition between seasons, there are sudden highs and lows, and with them really high temperatures,” she said. – We are in a wedge of high pressure, which can cause heat in Arizona and Phoenix itself.

Historical data shows that in Arizona’s state capital, 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C) is typically expected around May 2, although in one case it was recorded on March 26. However, the rapid warming could prove severe for the state’s residents as it follows a particularly cold winter – Saffelle warned that such a sudden change in temperature could exacerbate heat-related illnesses.

“It’s gotten hot in the last few days, really hot,” a Phoenix resident told Reuters from the shadows. My boyfriend went for a walk. I usually walk with him, but today it’s too hot.

AccuWeather meteorologists predict that the summer weather system will move westward over the next few days, extending even to the northeastern United States – it will be unusually warm from Chicago to New York. However, the beginning of next week may bring a cooling down again.
