A tornado passed over Kansas on Tuesday. The element contributed to the death of at least one person and destroyed at least 22 houses. This is the second tornado to hit the central United States in recent days.

Parts of the United States are currently in the zone of severe storms, bringing with them downpours and winds. On Tuesday afternoon, severe weather hit Kansas, and tornadoes were reported in several counties.

A series of severe storms

Officials in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, confirmed that a tornado touched down over the town of Westmoreland, the county seat. One person died and three were injured and hospitalized. The wind completely devastated at least 22 houses and several public buildings and seriously damaged 13 more.

“It took out the entire northern half of the city,” County Sheriff Shane Jager said.

Tornado damage assessment and search and rescue operations continued Wednesday in Westmoreland. A curfew was introduced to keep people away from damaged areas. There was no electricity supply in the city throughout the night – work to restore power continued also in the morning.

This is the latest in a series of tornadoes that have hit the central United States since Friday. Serious damage was reported in the states of Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Topeka, the stormy and rainy weather will remain over the region until the weekend.
