The United States and Britain accuse Iran of carrying out an attack on an oil tanker in the Arabian Sea. As a result of the attack, two crew members were killed – a British and a Romanian.
Iran earlier on Sunday denied being involved in the attack, thus responding to accusations made by Israel.
USA and UK about attack on tanker
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that the United States is convinced that the attack was carried out by Iran using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). “After reviewing the available information, we are confident that Iran carried out this attack in which two innocent people were killed,” Blinken said in a statement.
“Such actions threaten the freedom of navigation on this important route, as well as global transport and trade, and the lives of people on board attacked ships,” stressed the US Secretary of State. As he said, talks are being held regarding the appropriate response to the attack.
A statement on this matter was also issued by the British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab. “Britain condemns the unlawful and merciless attack on a merchant ship off the coast of Oman, which killed British and Romanian citizens. We believe that the attack was intentional, intentional and constituted a clear violation of international law by Iran. According to British assessments, it is highly probable. that Iran attacked MV Mercer Street in international waters off the coast of Oman on July 29, using one or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), “the head of British diplomacy wrote.
As he stressed, Iran must stop such attacks and ships must be able to move freely in accordance with international law. The UK is working with partners to jointly respond to this unacceptable attack, he added.
Arabian Sea – aggravation of the situation
The Mercer Street tanker, owned by the Zodiac Maritime company owned by Israeli billionaire Ejal Ofer, was attacked on Thursday night off the coast of Oman. On Friday, Israeli Foreign Minister Jair Lapid accused Iran of carrying out the attack.
The current exacerbation of the situation in the Arabian Sea and the surrounding waters is the most serious so far – commented the AP agency. She recalled that since the US withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018, attacks on merchant ships, of which Israel and the US have accused Iran, have been regularly carried out in these waters. Authorities in Tehran deny these accusations. Iran also blames Israel for attacks on its own units. As noted by the Associated Press, no one was killed in the previous attacks on ships.
The attack on Thursday also came at a time of additional tension between Israel and Iran following the freezing of negotiations on a nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran this month.
The Liberian-flagged tanker was heading from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
