The New York Times added that the president ordered the US armed forces preparing for a possible, coordinated nuclear confrontation with Russia, China and North Korea. The document examines in detail for the first time whether America is prepared to respond to potential nuclear crises that could erupt simultaneously or sequentially, using a combination of nuclear and conventional weapons.
“The President recently issued updated guidance on the use of nuclear weapons to take into account multiple opponents armed with nuclear weapons. (…) In particular, they took into account the 'significant increase in the size and diversity' of China's nuclear arsenal,” the NYT quoted Vipin Naranga, a nuclear strategist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who worked in Pentagonie before returning to his academic career in early August.
