City protests, police chief speaks of ‘racial elements’

The family of the teenager shot on April 13 is represented by Ben Crump and Lee Merritt, leading civil rights lawyers. They criticized officers for firing the suspect, describing him as a white male. – You can’t just shoot people without reason when someone knocks on your door. A knock on your door is no excuse. This man should be prosecuted,” said Crump.

In the US state of Missouri, a person arrested to investigate a crime must be released or charged within 24 hours.

Investigators are investigating whether the man’s act falls under state laws that allow citizens to use lethal weapons if they feel they are in serious danger. Critics of these laws say they facilitate violence.

“I notice racial elements in this case,” said Stacey Graves, Kansas City Police Chief. “I understand the concerns and reaction of the community to this particular incident,” she added.

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters gathered near the house where a 16-year-old boy was shot. They chanted “Black lives matter” and “Justice for Ralph.”

“One of the best bass clarinetists in Missouri”

Faith Spoonmore, the aunt of the shot teen, said it was “not a mistake” but a “hate crime”. “You don’t shoot a child in the head because the doorbell rang,” she said.

Spoonmore set up a fundraiser to raise funds for her nephew’s medical care. She wrote there, among other things, that the boy was supposed to pick up his brothers at “115th Terrace”, but went to “115th Street”.

“The man in this house opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground and the man shot at him again. Ralph was able to get up and run to a nearby house for help,” she described.

She also said that 16-year-old Ralph is “one of the best bass clarinetists in Missouri” and that he “plays many instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra.”
