After shooting a teenager, Lester was taken to the police station to testify. He was released less than two hours later and then left in an unknown direction. “I don’t have any information regarding his whereabouts,” prosecutor Thompson told the news conference. He assured that “law enforcement authorities are aware of the situation and are taking all appropriate action.”

The 16-year-old, under the care of doctors, joked with the president

The mother of the 16-year-old was interviewed by Gayle King, a journalist for CBS television. Cleo Nagbe, confirmed that her son is under the care of a team of doctors. She noted that Raplh “was shot at close range and the doctors have no idea how he survived.”

“Instead of the twins coming out and hugging him, he got a couple of bullets,” she pointed out. Nagbe mentioned that her son exchanged jokes with the president Joe Biden during a Monday phone call. She specified that it was about the president’s musical talents, and the 16-year-old is a bass clarinetist.

Recounting the events of last Thursday, Nagbe described that her son wanted to pick up his younger twin brothers from a friend’s house around 10 pm local time when he knocked on Lester’s door by mistake. She reported that her son rang the doorbell twice. After being shot, she said, he sought help from three houses in succession before someone decided to help him.

According to Kansas City’s KMBC News, Lester told police he thought someone had broken into his home and then fired two shots through his door. A witness to the incident reported hearing the teenager “screaming that he had been shot”.

Investigators said there was no exchange of views before the homeowner opened fire with a .32 caliber revolver.

Lee Merritt, the family’s lawyer, also spoke on CBS television, referring to the 84-year-old’s claims that he feared for his life. “When we learn that he feared for his life, and we know that he confronted a 16-year-old boy ringing his doorbell, the use of such force is unwarranted,” he said.

The lawyer said the family would now talk to prosecutors to find out why the attempted murder charge was not on the list.
