Kamala Harris made an unexpected appearance on the first day of the Democratic Party convention in Chicago. The US vice president, now seeking victory in the November election, thanked President Joe Biden for his “historic leadership”. Steve Kerr, Olympic champion, NBA champion and one of Donald Trump's biggest critics in the world of American sports, also spoke during the convention. He refused to appear at the White House with his championship team years ago so that Trump could not use Steph Curry – a living basketball legend – for political purposes.

In a brief speech that was not announced in advance and was not on the program for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Kamala Harris she came on stage and highlighted the merits Joe Biden for the country.

“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership and for your lifetime of service to our country. We are forever grateful,” Harris said, to which the crowd responded with chants of “thank you Joe.”

Harris' main speech is scheduled for the final day of the convention, Thursday, when she is expected to officially accept the party's nomination. The highlight of Monday's program is a speech by Biden himself, who is expected to endorse Harris, handing her the party leadership.

He consistently refused to do so throughout Trump's presidency.

Kerr, whose father, who was killed in the attack, was for years an ambassador in Beirut, among other positions, has clearly and vocally opposed Trump's migration policy, drawing attention to his divisive language. The lack of visits to the White House was dictated by Kerr's and the GSW team's belief that Trump could use the appearances of one of the NBA's biggest stars, Steph Curry, to conduct politics.

Traditional visits by NBA champions to the White House have returned following Joe Biden's election victory.

Harris was also supported from the stage by Shawn Fain, head of a major auto workers' union, who said that “Kamala is one of them (union workers – ed.)” and Donald Trump is a “scab” and “billionaire class lapdog.”

The event was attended by the Second Gentleman of the United States, Douglas Emhoff, and Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate, Tim Walz, with his wife Gwen.
