The US secretary of state said Wednesday in Riga that the United States had evidence of Russia’s military action plans against Ukraine. Antony Blinken warned Russia that if it invaded Ukraine, it would face serious economic consequences.

– In recent weeks, Russia has intensified planning of potential military actions in Ukraine, including the deployment of tens of thousands of additional soldiers around its borders – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday in Riga at a press conference following the end of a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

Blinken said the US was “deeply concerned about evidence that Russia is planning aggressive measures against Ukraine.” The head of US diplomacy added that Moscow’s plans include both efforts to destabilize Ukraine from within and a large-scale military operation.

Blinken reported that, among other things, there has been an over tenfold increase in propaganda materials targeting Ukraine appearing in social networks against Ukraine. He added that this level of dissemination of this content was last observed in 2014, before Russia occupied Crimea and the outbreak of the war with pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas.

Blinken warns Russia against attacking Ukraine

– We must be prepared for all possibilities. We do not know if Vladimir Putin made the decision to invade Ukraine, but he is gathering forces that can be used for it, said Blinken.

– We made it clear to the Kremlin that we would react decisively, including through high-impact economic measures – those that we have refrained from in the past – stressed the US Secretary of State. He added that such a reaction would seriously hit the Russian economy.

Blinken added that there is “tremendous solidarity” within NATO about the willingness to take serious measures against Russia if it attacks Ukraine again. He also recalled that the USA continued to support the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The claim that Ukraine may pose a threat to Russia is deeply wrong and should be treated as a joke, assessed the head of US diplomacy.

Aliu: The USA and its allies will respond to Russian aggression

After the Blinken conference, chargé d’affaires of the US embassy in Poland, Bix Aliu wrote on Twitter that “the United States together with its allies will definitely respond to Russian aggression and provocations.” “Secretary Blinken reiterated that NATO is ready to strengthen defense capabilities on the eastern flank,” he added.
