At least three children and three adults have died from injuries sustained in a shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, Reuters reported. Shots were fired at a local school. The attacker also died during the intervention of the officers.
Police began receiving calls about the incident after 10 a.m. local time (5 p.m. Polish time). Officers who arrived on the scene heard gunshots coming from the second floor of the school building, said Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Nashville Police Department.
He said the attacker was a woman. She died during the intervention of the officers. Aaron reported that she was shot by the police.
A spokesman initially said the woman looked like a teenager. Later, however, the police clarified that she was 28 years old. She was armed with at least two automatic rifles and a pistol.
Three children and two adults are dead
Three children with gunshot wounds were taken to the pediatric ward. All three were pronounced dead upon arrival, a spokesman for the Vanderbilt University Hospital said, quoted by NBC. The hospital later reported that three adults had also died. A police spokesman said the attacker was among the seven fatalities.
Established in 2001, the private Christian Covenant School has about 200 students. The facility runs pre-school and grades 1-6.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee tweeted that he was “following the dire situation closely” at the school. He also called for prayers for the community and the city.
