Andrew Lester, 84, has been charged with first-degree assault and aggravated assault, County Attorney Clay Zachary Thompson said. A man shot a 16-year-old boy twice after knocking on his door by mistake. “I can say that the case was racially motivated,” the prosecutor added.

16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot twice April 13 after knocking on the wrong address by mistake. Andrew Lester, 84, who lives there, opened fire on the teenager. “The man has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree assault and aggravated assault,” County Attorney Clay Zachary Thompson told CNN on Monday. This means that if Lester is convicted, he faces life in prison.

“I can say that the case was racially motivated,” the prosecutor added, without giving further details on the perpetrator’s motivation. He said it wasn’t clear if Yarl knocked on the door or rang the bell, but he “didn’t cross the threshold” of Lester’s house. The prosecutor also informed that, according to preliminary findings, the 84-year-old shot through the glass door. There is no indication that there was any prior exchange of words between the victim and the attacker.

Shot because he knocked on the wrong address

The New York Times points out that the 84-year-old was at large at the time Zachary Thompson reported the charges and the warrant for Lester’s arrest. After the assault, the man was taken to the police station to testify. However, he was released less than two hours later, and the 84-year-old fled in an unknown direction. “I have no information regarding his whereabouts,” the prosecutor admitted during a press conference. He added that “law enforcement authorities are aware of the situation and are taking all appropriate action.”

Under questioning, Lester told investigators he thought someone was trying to break into his home. He was also “scared to death” of Yarl’s height and his own “inability to defend himself”. He claims he was lying in bed when he heard the doorbell ring. Then he grabbed a gun, according to court documents cited by CNN.

The teenager is fighting for his life

The struggling teenager’s father, Paul Yarl, told The New York Times he was “breathed with relief” when he learned of the charges against Lester. Previously, he had felt “confused” knowing that the perpetrator was “allowed to go home and sleep”. “He could have done it again with another kid who looked like Ralph,” he added. He said he was still “in shock” after Thursday’s attack. He described his son as a “good kid”, excelling at school, interested in sports, and loving music and video games.

Ralph Yarl was in a stable condition when taken to hospital, but his injuries were life-threatening. The teenager has since returned home from the hospital, but “is still fighting after a hard time,” a lawyer representing the family of Ben Crump, who was shot, told CNN. According to the aunt of the shot 16-year-old, Faith Spoonmore, Ralph made a mistake looking for the address where he was supposed to pick up his brothers – instead of “115th Terrace” he went to “115th Street”. Both addresses are close to each other.

Protest outside the perpetrator’s house

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters gathered near the house where Ralph Yarl was shot. They chanted “Black lives matter” and “Justice for Ralph.” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said she “notices racial elements to this case.” “I understand the concerns and reaction of the community to this particular incident,” she added.
