A 69-year-old South Carolina woman was fatally attacked by an alligator while walking her dog on Tuesday. Her body was found at the edge of a lagoon in the town of Hilton Head Island.

The 69-year-old woman was “found at the edge of a lagoon and golf course” in Hilton Head Island around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The rescuers’ attempt to assess her condition was interrupted by the appearance of an alligator that “appeared to be watching over her”.

After “the reptile was safely removed” from the place where the 69-year-old woman was found, “her body was recovered”. The woman was dead. The local Sheriff’s Office says an autopsy will be performed soon.

According to the investigation, the woman was attacked while walking her dog. Her four-legged friend has been found unharmed, Major Angela Viens, a spokeswoman for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, was quoted as saying by Sky News. This is the second fatal alligator attack in the county in the past 12 months, officials said. Last August, Nancy A. Becker, an 88-year-old resident of Sun City, fell victim to the reptile.
