It is unimaginable for a mother to leave her 16-month-old baby unattended for 10 days and go on vacation, prosecutor Michael O’Malley, who is handling the Kristel Candelario case, said in a statement. Her daughter, left at home, died.

Living in Cleveland, Ohio Kristel Candelario allegedly left her 16-month-old daughter Jailyn, previously described by local authorities as a “one-year-old girl”, at home “all alone and unattended”. At the time, she was “hopping in Puerto Rico and Detroit,” NBC News reported. When the 31-year-old returned home on June 16, the child was unresponsive. Kristel Candelario called emergency services to the scene. Paramedics pronounced Jailyn dead. The Cuyahoga County Coroner determined that she died after being left unattended for approximately 10 days.

The day after the intervention of the services, the police arrested the mother. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday said the 31-year-old was charged with several counts, including murder and child endangerment. The first hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, CBS News reported.

She left the baby at home, went “on vacation”

“It’s inconceivable for a mother to leave her 16-month-old baby unattended for 10 days and go on vacation,” prosecutor Michael O’Malley said in a statement quoted by the Hartford Courant. “Imagining the suffering of this child in the last days of living alone is truly terrifying. We will do everything in our power to bring justice on his behalf,” he added.

Shortly after Candelario’s arrest, her neighbors told an NBC reporter in Cleveland that the defendant had asked them for child custody in the past and “they don’t understand why she didn’t ask for help this time.” Remembering the dead girl, a 13-year-old boy from the neighborhood said: “She really didn’t deserve what happened to her. She was amazing, really lovely. I miss her very much.
