A 15-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while surfing near Kismet Beach on New York’s Fire Island. The incident happened on Monday afternoon. The boy was rushed to Good Samaritan University Hospital on Long Island.

A 15-year-old boy was attacked by a shark at around 3 a.m. local time on Monday afternoon while surfing near a New York beach. The animal bit him on the heel and toes of his left foot. Despite this, the teenager managed to swim to shore, reports CNN, citing information provided by the Suffolk Police Department.

The injured teenager was found on the beach by a beachgoer who provided him with medical treatment until officers from the Suffolk County Maritime Bureau arrived. The boy was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital on Long Island. Despite the wounds, the teenager’s limbs remained intact. His injuries are not life threatening.

Monday’s incident was the first recorded case of a shark biting a person in Suffolk this summer. As CNN points out, although similar incidents are much more common on the coast of Florida and North and South Carolina, last year several beaches were closed due to a wave of shark attacks off the coast of New York.
