American actor Alec Baldwin has been charged with manslaughter for shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust”. He faces imprisonment and fines.

Grand jury in New Mexico accused actor Alec Baldwin of negligent use of a firearm and manslaughter of the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust”.

It was described as “an act committed with total disregard or indifference to the safety of others.”

If convicted, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, a prop designer working on the set of the film, was also charged with manslaughter and tampering with evidence. The woman pleads not guilty.

Ukrainian cinematographer Hutchins was killed on October 21, 2021, and director Joel Souza was injured when a gun held by Baldwin fired while rehearsing a scene on the set of the western film “Rust.” The actor denied that he had pressed the trigger of the gun.

Baldwin’s lawyers, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, were quoted by CNN as saying in a statement that they “look forward to the day of trial.” Defense lawyers had previously argued that their client was innocent.

The manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dropped once in April 2023. Prosecutors then stated that they “cannot act in accordance with the current time restrictions and based on the facts and evidence provided by law enforcement authorities in their current form.”

“Additional facts have come to light”

The initial decision to withdraw them was made after authorities learned that the weapons used during the recordings “may have been modified,” law enforcement told CNN. However, prosecutors announced that the case may be reopened.

In October, prosecutors said that “additional facts have come to light.” In their opinion, the artist is responsible for Hutchins’ death.

A report by ballistics and forensic experts commissioned by prosecutors says: “Although Alec Baldwin repeatedly denies pulling the trigger, given the examinations, findings and observations presented here, the trigger must have been pulled or depressed enough to release the fully cocked or retracted hammer of the revolver.

The gun was given to Baldwin on set by assistant director David Hall. He was supposed to assure the actor that the weapon was safe. Charged with “negligent use of a deadly weapon”, in 2023 he signed a court agreement providing for a six-month suspended prison sentence.
