USA. Allegations against grandmother in the murder of an 8-year-old girl in North Carolina

A 72-year-old North Carolina woman has been charged with the murder of her 8-year-old granddaughter, local police said. The child died as a result of extensive injuries to the whole body, including the head. Grandma was the girl’s legal guardian.

On Tuesday, February 7, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office was notified that an 8-year-old girl had died shortly after being transported to Rocky Mount Hospital with serious injuries. Police officers who arrived at the scene determined that the child lived in Nashville, just a few miles from the clinic, ABC News reports.

“As established in the course of the investigation, the 8-year-old was beaten by her grandmother so badly that she died from her injuries. The child had severe injuries all over her body, including the head,” the Nash County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement released the next day, quoted by ABC News. The police also explained that the 8-year-old and several siblings lived daily with her grandmother, who was their legal guardian. According to the station, the woman was identified as 72-year-old Patricia Ann Ricks. She has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and child abuse, authorities said. The woman is scheduled to appear for her first court hearing on Thursday, February 9.

Officers said the motive for the crime is currently unknown to them. The investigation into the matter is ongoing. ABC News, citing police information, reports that the siblings of the murdered girl were placed in a care facility.
