Police in Huntington Beach (USA) detained an underage driver who hit two cyclists and a pedestrian in one evening. One of the cyclists died. The teenager is currently in a correctional facility, and the investigation into “intentional deductions” is ongoing.
A series of hit-and-runs occurred in the southern California city of Huntington Beach on Sunday. Within 45 minutes, the teenage driver allegedly hit two cyclists and one pedestrian with his car, each time fleeing the scene.
A 70-year-old Huntington Beach resident who was hit while riding a bicycle did not survive the car impact, local police said in a message on their website on Wednesday. In connection with a series of three “intentional hit-and-runs”, the teenager was arrested on suspicion of murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently in a correctional facility.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities said the “incidents are likely related.” They are not disclosing “any further details” at this stage. Huntington Beach Police Chief Eric Parra thanked residents for their “support and tips that assisted in the arrest of the suspect.” He also informed that the officers had located the boy’s vehicle before his arrest.
Black statistics. How many cyclists die on the roads
In Orange County, where Huntington Beach is located, 76 cyclists died on roads between 2018 and 2022, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing data from the University of California at Berkeley. The NYT noted that the only California county where more cyclists died during the same period was Los Angeles County.
