We cannot agree with a situation in which those who undermine the order based on the UN Charter are gaining strength, said President Andrzej Duda during the Summit for the Future at the UN. He pointed out that an example of this is Russia, which attacked sovereign Ukraine. Duda also assessed that in order to maintain peace and security, it is necessary to strengthen international law.

President Andrzej Duda has been in the United States since Saturday. He arrived in New York to participate in the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place on Tuesday.

On Monday morning, he attended the Summit for the Future at the United Nations General Assembly Hall. This is a meeting in which world leaders seek to strengthen international cooperation in the face of new global challenges. The aim of the summit is to adopt a “Pact for the Future.”

Andrzej Duda noted in his speech that the order based on international law and solidarity, as stipulated in the UN Charter, is now seriously threatened. In his opinion, global multilateralism is not functioning properly in many respects and requires reform.

– We cannot agree to a situation in which those who undermine the order based on the UN Charter are gaining strength – he said. As he pointed out, a “striking” example of this is the aggression Russia on Ukraine. – Being a permanent member of the Security Council (UN – ed.), Russia should support both the UN Charter and international law. However, by carrying out an attack on a sovereign state, Russia has abandoned this obligation. It can no longer claim to protect the security of the international system and other nations, he continued.

As he said, in order to restore faith in multilateralism and maintain peace and security, it is necessary to strengthen international law. – Despite many reservations about the United Nations system, there is no better alternative to multilateralism. Today's global challenges are complex and require collective action, because they cannot be faced alone at the level of individual states – he assessed.

Pact accepted

On that day, UN countries adopted the “Pact for the Future.” This is to be a groundbreaking declaration committing to concrete actions for a safer, more peaceful, sustainable and inclusive world for generations to come. Its adoption was the culmination of many months of negotiations.

The Pact, together with its annexes, the Global Digital Pact and the Declaration for Future Generations, was adopted unanimously, despite the rejection by the UN General Assembly of a last-minute amendment submitted by, among others, Russia, IranNorth Korea and Syria. The amendment sought to include language calling for non-interference in matters of national sovereignty and the primacy of intergovernmental deliberations, in effect diminishing the role of civil society or private sector interests.

“There is no meeting scheduled” with Trump

Later, during a press conference, journalists asked Andrzej Duda whether he was counting on a meeting with the candidate seeking re-election in USA Donald TrumpOn Sunday, the Polish president visited the Pauline sanctuary in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, known as the “American Częstochowa.” He attended a mass and a ceremony to unveil a monument to honor Poles who fought for independence after World War II. Initially, Trump was supposed to attend the same ceremony, as his campaign representatives reported on Wednesday. A day later, however, they announced that these plans were no longer valid. According to Marcin Wrona, TVN's “Fakty” correspondent, this was due to security concerns.

Asked on Monday about the possibility of meeting with Trump, Duda replied that the former president is currently pursuing his election campaign. He emphasized that the former American leader received an invitation to Sunday's unveiling of the monument in Doylestown, but Trump and his aides “decided not to participate in the ceremony.”

– But the president (Trump – editor's note) made a nice statement in the context of my presence there yesterday, which was planned earlier, thank you for that – Duda added. – Whether our paths will cross here in New York or not, it is difficult for me to say at the moment. There is no meeting planned – he emphasized.

When asked if there was a meeting scheduled with president of the United States Joe BidenDuda replied: – Of course, as always with the President of the United States during the United Nations General Assembly.

– I hope that there will be such a meeting tomorrow and, like every year, there will also be an opportunity to talk – he said.
