A 62-year-old man who was caught trying to smuggle birds from Guyana to New York has been sentenced to one year and a day in prison. “I’ll stay away from birds,” he promised in the video he submitted to the court.

“I will stay away from the birds,” the prisoner has now promised in a video he has submitted to the court. His lawyer, Christine Delince, in a memo quoted by the British daily, asked for leniency, saying he was “incredibly remorseful” for a crime fueled by a love of finches dating back to his childhood in Guyana. This love is said to have given him solace in many personal difficulties.
