The US state of Colorado is working to identify three people whose bodies were found at a campsite. The macabre discovery was made accidentally by a tourist exploring the area alone.

The man, whose name was not given, was hiking through the Gunnison National Forest in Gunnison County. On Sunday, in a remote part of Gold Creek, near a former campsite, he found the body of an unidentified person. He notified the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office, whose officers found the remains of two more people at the scene, deputy sheriff Josh Ashe told CNN. He added that the body had probably been in the campsite for “a long time”. This is evidenced by the degree of decomposition they have undergone. Now authorities are working to identify the bodies.

Human remains at the campsite. There is no indication of third party involvement

According to Gunnison County Coroner Michael Barnes, the individuals found may have died in the winter, and the cause of death was “malnutrition or weathering.” “It now appears that the three people started long-term camping near the Gold Creek campground in mid-July last year and tried to stay there over the winter,” Barnes told CNN, adding that evidence found at the site indicated the group may have planned to live there permanently. As he noted, at the moment there is no indication that third parties contributed to the death. The autopsy results are expected to be released in the coming weeks, CBS News reported.
