Dangerous snowstorms hit California. Up to three meters of snow are expected to fall in the mountains by the end of the weekend. Wind gusts may reach up to 160 kilometers per hour and cause blizzards.

Snow began falling in the Pacific Northwest late Wednesday. On Thursday, it spread to the northern California coast, the Klamath Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Snowfall is forecast to reach extreme levels of 7.5 to 12.5 centimeters per hour from Friday to Saturday.

Two meters of snow have already fallen in the Sierra Nevada mountains and it is not stopping. In total, up to three meters of snow could accumulate in just two to three days.

“Serious threat to travelers”

“The storm will cover California with the heaviest snowfall this year. This poses a serious threat to travelers, but will provide enormous help in supplying the state (affected by drought) with water,” CNN wrote on Thursday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that traveling on roads or even leaving home during storm it will be dangerous. “Conditions are very confusing, so this is not the time to gamble with your or your family’s life,” experts emphasize.

Up to 160 km/h

“The most extreme conditions will occur at the highest altitudes, with wind gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour on the highest peaks and meters of snow. Winds are expected to blow so hard that accurate measurements may be difficult due to the risk of huge snowdrifts.” noted CNN.

Heavy snowfall and strong winds will cause rare and long-lasting snowstorms, including in most of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Visibility may drop to almost zero.
