A puma attacked two brothers in the Georgetown area of ​​California's El Dorado County. One of the men was killed and the other was seriously injured, local authorities reported.

On Saturday morning, a fawn puma attacked two brothers who were looking for antlers shed by deer in the forest. One of them, a 21-year-old, was killed, the other was seriously injured in the face. The incident occurred near the city of Georgetown located in El Dorado County. It was the first fatal cougar attack in California in about 20 years, local authorities said.

El Dorado County sheriff's deputies said an 18-year-old who survived the cougar encounter called for help. He suffered very serious facial injuries. When rescuers arrived at the scene, they provided him with first aid and took him to the hospital.

Police officers then began looking for the second man. They found the dead 21-year-old next to a puma. They scared the animal away by shooting.

“Fatal attacks like this are extremely rare,” Kyle Parker, spokesman for the El Dorado Sheriff's Office, told California news station KCRA.

Game hunters from El Dorado County, along with California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials, re-tracked the cougar and euthanized it. The animal's carcass was sent to the laboratory for various tests.
