Donald Trump's regulation on “defending women against extremism of gender ideology” introduces changes to passports and other official documents. It states that gender is an “immutable biological fact.”
The executive order signed by Trump states that US policy will be based on the recognition of two genders, described as “unchangeable and rooted in fundamental and indisputable reality.” In state documents, the term “gender” (gender identity) was also replaced by the term “sex” – meaning biological sex.
Changes in passports after Trump's decision
One of the first consequences of the regulation may be changes in American passports, which from 2022 offer three options in the gender category: male, female and X – other. Previously, this choice did not have to be consistent with the gender shown in the person's other documents, and changing identification did not require the presentation of any medical documentation.
Similar changes were introduced during the president's presidency Joe Biden in other areas, such as Social Security records, which made it easier to change gender markers, although they did not offer an “X” option.
The new regulation requires all agencies managing prisons, migrant shelters and other “intimate spaces” to divide them according to biological sex.
A step towards fulfilling another promise
According to Axios, the decree may also be a step towards fulfilling the election promise Donald Trump regarding the ban on the participation of transgender people in women's sports.
The topic of gender and transgenderism was one of the main themes of Trump's election campaign; This aspect was also emphasized by the president's most frequently broadcast campaign spot in the entire country.
