Local officials said a policewoman was killed in a shootout in a part of South Side town and another officer was badly injured. It happened on Saturday during the detention of the suspects shortly after 21.
“The officers were taken to a hospital at the University of Chicago, where the woman’s death was confirmed. (…) The second policeman was in critical condition and was fighting for his life,” ABC reported. Regret about the shooting of the woman was expressed by the mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the policewoman was the city’s first ever fatally shot official in the city since Lightfoot took office in 2018.
“We are asking Chicago to pray for both policemen, their families and their colleagues. (…) This is another example of how the Chicago Police Department and officers risk their lives to protect the city day in and day out,” the first deputy told the Chicago Sun-Times. Police Chief Eric Carter.
The ABC detailed that among those dead in Saturday’s shootings was a 37-year-old man found with a gunshot wound on the Southwest Side. He did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
A 24-year-old man transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital also died on Sunday morning. He was shot in the stomach three times in Near South Side.
Another 37-year-old man was shot dead in a bar on the Far South Side. At least five other people were injured there during the shooting. “Several people, including two boys aged 16 and 17, were shot in the Chicago attacks on Saturday night and Sunday morning,” ABC reported.
