Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, announced on Tuesday night that he would be seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 US presidential election. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum made the same declaration on Wednesday.

Christie began his campaign by attacking the former president Donald Trumpwho is seeking re-election. The former governor filed the relevant documents with the Federal Election Commission, and then announced his intention to run in the primaries during a meeting with voters in the state of New Hampshire, where he announced that he was the only candidate of the Republican Party who could defeat Trump.

Once one of the most popular Republican politicians in USA he said that other politicians of his party running in the elections do not have the courage to attack Trump and are even afraid to mention him in their speeches.

Christie recalled the numerous investigations into the former president and his unclear stance on the war Russia against Ukraine; Trump said he would end this conflict “within 24 hours” and said he had good relations with Vladimir Putin. Christie referred to these statements and called Trump “Putin’s puppet,” reports AFP.

So far, the former governor is not doing well in the polls and support for him does not exceed 1 percent. CNN estimates that his chances of winning the Republican Party nomination for president are “zero.”

Christie, who is a former federal prosecutor, ran in the 2016 election, and when Trump won the primaries, he became his adviser. However, he became a strong critic of the former president when he did not recognize the result of the 2020 election.

The Associated Press points out that Republicans who do not support the former president are looking forward to the Trump-Christie debate because of the ex-governor’s eloquent, fierce polemic style.

Doug Burgum – who is he?

Doug Burgum, a politician much less recognizable in the US than Christie, has a very significant budget. In an interview with NBC News, he said that his election program is not focused on the culture wars between Republicans and Democrats, but primarily on the economy and national security.

NBC News reports that polls show support for Burgum’s candidacy at 1 percent. It places him very far behind the favorites in this race, namely Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who are busy attacking each other right now.

Former US Vice President, Republican Mike Pencewho registered as a candidate in the presidential election on Monday, publicly announced his start in the election race on Wednesday.
