The funeral of former Secretary of State and General Colin Powell was held on Friday at the Washington National Cathedral on Friday. “I considered Colin to be an almost timeless figure because his virtues were Homeric: honesty, dignity, loyalty and an unwavering devotion to his calling,” she said in a speech at Albright, who was Powell’s predecessor as head of US diplomacy.

Albright mentioned that despite political differences she developed a close friendship with Powell, and the general was a rare example in Washington of a man whose “conscience was awake.”

Richard Armitage, Powell’s former deputy in the Ministry of Diplomacy and his longtime friend, emphasized that the general was characterized by kindness and understanding towards subordinates, he also emphasized his sense of humor.

He recalled an anecdote from Powell’s meeting with the head of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anna Lindh, who presented him with a set of Abba albums as a gift. Powell’s reaction was to get down on one knee and sing the entire text of the song “Mamma Mia”, to the amazement of everyone present. He also confessed that every Sunday after visiting the church, Powell reported to Armitage that he was in a state of grace.

Colin Powell died on October 18 at Walter Reed Military Hospital from complications from COVID-19. As the son of Jamaican immigrants, he was the first black person to hold a number of senior positions in the United States. He was, among others, national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the term of George Bush Sr., and Secretary of State in the Junior Bush administration.
