Donald Trump, commenting on Justin Trudeau's decision to step down as head of the Liberal party and prime minister, said that many people in Canada want it to become the 51st US state. He added that the United States and Canada would make a great country together, and taxes would go down because tariffs would disappear.

“Many people in Canada would like it as the 51st state (USA – ed.). The United States can no longer suffer from the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned “- wrote Trump on his social networking site Truth Social.

“If Canada united with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would drop significantly, and Canadians would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround them. Together, what a great nation this would be!” – Trump wrote.

Trump was to talk about creating an “economic union” with the US with a Canadian investor appearing on the Shark Tank reality show, Kevin O'Leary.

However, such a scenario does not enjoy wider support among Canadians. According to December survey Angus Reid Institute, 5 percent of respondents support joining the United States.
