Wray was appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term by Trump, who fired his predecessor over his investigation into Russian ties to the president's entourage. Still, in recent years, Wray has been heavily criticized by the current president-elect for allegedly politicizing the service. Particularly controversial was the FBI's search of Trump's Florida estate due to his holding of secret documents.

“Christopher Wray's resignation is a great day for America because it will end the weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice. I just don't know what happened to him. Now we will restore the rule of law for all Americans,” he commented in Wednesday, Trump in a post on Truth Social. “Under the leadership of Christopher Wray, the FBI unlawfully entered my home, without cause, worked diligently to illegally impeach and prosecute me, and did everything to interfere with America's success and future. They have used their enormous powers to threaten and destroy many innocent Americans, and some some of them will never be able to recover from what was done to them,” he added.

Trump has previously suggested that he intends to fire Wray before the end of his term and he chose Kash Patel, his close colleague, as his successor. Patel is a controversial former prosecutor who won Trump's sympathy by criticizing the services' actions in the scandal regarding the Russian connections of the president's people, and in recent years he has repeatedly announced revenge on political opponents, journalists and representatives of the “deep state” who, in his opinion, participated in a conspiracy against Trump.

In an interview with NBC, Trump claimed that he had “no intention of going back to the past,” but then added that Patel should launch investigations against his opponents “if they did something wrong.” “They were after me and I didn't do anything wrong,” he said.
