The US prosecutor’s office is investigating the murder of a 41-year-old woman from Orlando who was shot by a ten-year-old child. A moment before her death, the victim quarreled with the girl’s mother. “The child took the gun out of its mother’s purse and pulled the trigger,” reports Monique H. Worrell, a Florida state attorney.
The tragedy occurred on May 30, during a picnic organized on the occasion of Remembrance Day, an American national holiday. Washington Post journalists report that two women, Lakrisha Isaac, 31, and Lashun Rodgers, 10, began arguing over the social media post. Women – according to witnesses quoted by American journalists – quickly switched from words to blows.
During the brawl, Lakrisha Isaac gave the purse to her ten-year-old daughter. In the middle – as the Washington Post reports, there was a pistol that the child reached for. A ten-year-old girl fired two shots at a woman with whom her mother was arguing. One of the bullets hit the 41-year-old in the head.
American journalists cite a statement by the Orlando police that the injured woman had slipped to the ground. The girl (as witnesses reported to the police) was then supposed to scream that the victim “should not mess with her mother”. Lakrisha Isaac – according to the Washington Post, took her daughter’s gun shortly after the tragedy and returned home with it – without helping a 41-year-old lying in the blood.
Lashun Rodgers, 41, was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.
The police detained a ten-year-old girl and her mother. The child was arrested by the Department of Children and Families. The prosecutor’s office – as reported by ClickOrlando.com – has not yet made a decision whether the girl will be accused of murder. The charges were heard by her mother, who is to be held responsible, inter alia, for the murder committed by negligence and careless storage of firearms.
Monique H. Worrell, the state attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties, Florida, said her office is investigating the tragedy and “will consider all circumstances, including the child’s age.”
– I want to make it clear that our office has not made any decision on the indictment. This is one of the most tragic events I’ve seen in my 22-year career, said Attorney Worrell in her statement. She noted that “regardless of the feelings associated with the event, it concerns a person who is still only a child”.
