A former Apple engineer has been accused of stealing information about self-driving car technology. The accusations against the engineer appeared only five years after he left for China.

Prosecutors accused Weibao Wang, 35, of stealing thousands of files containing classified information from the company. They were supposed to be obtained on behalf of a Chinese company. However, its name has not been made public. This is the third time a former Apple employee has been accused of spying for Chinese companies.

Wang joined Apple in March 2016. He was employed in a team developing technology for autonomous cars. The man signed a contract obliging him to keep the project confidential. Work on the development of advanced technology was one of the company’s most closely guarded secrets.

The man resigned from the company two years later. He was then supposed to be employed by another company developing autonomous technology, which he did not inform his previous employer about.

When Wang’s actions came to light, the American services began to be interested in him. However, the engineer managed to escape to Guangzhou, China. The man is supposed to stay there until today. If he is ever extradited, he will face up to 10 years in prison on each of the six counts.
