Flights were originally suspended after the collision of a military helicopter and a passenger aircraft in the same area.
According to Reuters, citing the American official, helicopter flights – only recently restored after the January disaster – were suspended until the incident from Thursday was explained. Then the flight of a military helicopter to Pentagonduring which the pilot chose the “observation” route, forced to change the course two passenger planes of the Delta Air and Republic Airways lines, approaching landing in Washington.
Reaction of the Minister of Transport
This incident caused a sharp reaction of the Minister of Transport Sean Duffy, who appealed to the Pentagon to finish flights in a concentrated air space at the approach to the airport Ronald Reagan in Washington (DCA). The Pentagon is located near the airport.
“Safety must always be in the first place,” Duffy said on the X platform. “We have just lost 67 souls! End of helicopter flights for VIPs and unnecessary training in a crowded airspace of DCA full of civilians. Take a taxi or Uber – besides, most VIPs have their own limousines” – he added.
January 29 as a result Black Hawk military collision with the American Airlines aircraft 67 people were killed just before approaching the airport. After the accident, helicopter flights were prohibited in specific airspace zones.
