Frost and heavy snowfall are sweeping across the United States. Blizzards and blizzards are expected from Texas to the southeastern coast of the country, also in places where they are rare. Residents of northern regions, however, face bone-penetrating cold.

The attack of winter is associated with the breakdown of the polar vortex and the inflow of cold air masses over the United States. Arctic cold reached deep south into Texas and Florida, bringing with it heavy snowfall, strong winds and a sudden drop in temperatures.

According to CNN, dangerous frosts may affect up to 220 million people in the United States. A state of emergency was declared in Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida, and in Texas, authorities mobilized two state agencies to deal with the effects of snowstorms.

Cold noon

Snowstorms and frosts are a rare occurrence in the southeastern United States. Some regions do not even have specialized equipment in the event of heavy snowfall – as Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said, his state received support from Arkansas in the form of 12 snow plows.

The state's largest city, New Orleans, is bracing for historic snowfall. According to forecasts, up to 8 centimeters of snow is expected to fall there by Tuesday morning – such a thick snow cover has never been recorded there. New Orleans last had measurable snowfall in 2009, with the record set in 1963 being just under 7 cm. In northern districts, more than 17 cm may accumulate by the end of the day.

“I didn't think I'd ever have the opportunity to say this in this part of the world, but snowstorms are possible in some areas,” Donald Jones of NWS Lake Charles in southern Louisiana told CNN.

Winter conditions, of course, cause difficulties for travelers. More than 1,700 flights scheduled for Tuesday were canceled and two major airports in Houston, Texas, were closed. At the busy Atlanta International Airport, runways have been protected from freezing. In some states, authorities decided to cancel school classes on Tuesday and close offices.

Frosty nights

Winter conditions have not only arrived in the southeastern United States. In North Dakota, the wind chill dropped to -51 degrees Celsius in places on Monday night into Tuesday. Meteorologists from the NWS branch in Bismarck warned that the next night would also be dangerously frosty, and in such conditions it would take just five minutes for frostbite to occur on exposed skin.

Heavy snowfall is also expected in the Great Lakes region. In Buffalo, New York, a snowstorm began overnight and could add more than a foot of snow by morning. Such intense rainfall is also expected in the north of the state, in the city of Watertown.
