Hunter Biden's trial has begun in a federal court in Delaware. The US president's son faces charges of illegal possession of weapons. Joe Biden did not appear in the courtroom, but issued a statement. The trial in Wilmington, the Bidens' hometown, began on Monday choice jury. 12 jurors will decide on the guilt or acquittal of the 54-year-old son of the American president, who faces three charges related to his purchase of a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018. One is related to illegal possession of a weapon by a person addicted to drugs, two more are certified by Biden on the application for a firearms license, that he does not use drugs. Together, the charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 25 years in prison, but according to the Wall Street Journal, if convicted, Hunter Biden's possible sentence will likely be much less.

Marcin Wrona, correspondent of “Fakty” TVN in the United States, noted that this is a precedent. Never before has the child of a sitting president been charged in a criminal trial.

Prosecutors also intend to use fragments of the son's autobiography Joe Biden, who wrote that at the time he bought the revolver, “all his energy revolved around smoking dope and arranging drug buys – feeding the beast.” Investigators are also expected to present recordings showing young Biden smoking crack cocaine.

Another trial in sight

The case in the Delaware court is one of two brought by special prosecutor David Weiss. Hunter Biden's second trial is scheduled to begin in September in California – regarding tax crimes, including failure to pay taxes.

Initially, Weiss and Biden's lawyers struck a deal on both issues that was intended to allow the president's son to avoid prison. However, this agreement was questioned by the judge presiding over the trial in Delaware and ultimately both parties did not reach an agreement.

The first trial will probably end shortly before Joe Biden's first election debate Donald Trumpwhile the second one may fall just over a month before the elections.
