The U.S. health authorities on Saturday advised residents to return to wearing masks where new coronavirus infections are on the rise. 13.7 percent of Americans live in communities affected by high levels of COVID-19. These include the largest US cities – New York and Los Angeles.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there was an increase in COVID-19 cases from 4.9 to 13.7 percent compared to last week. Among the severely affected coronavirus counties with more than one million inhabitants include Los Angeles, Maricopa, Arizona, Kings and Queens, New York, and San Bernardino, California.

The list covers a large part of the New York metropolitan area. Officials in the state recently urged schools to return to wearing masks indoors to reduce the spread of COVID-19, as well as the respiratory virus RSV and influenza. Los Angeles authorities also warned that mandatory wearing masks indoors may return as cases of COVID-19 have increased,” CBS News said.

The CDC’s recommendations may also include influenza and RSV cases to help curb the tide of infection, it added. It would overburden hospitals.
