The US authorities ordered their diplomatic to suspend new meetings with foreigners applying for student visits as part of exchange programs – informs Reuters. The State Department is preparing to exacerbate the verification of foreign students.

Key facts:

  • Reuters: US authorities are working on tightening students' verification in social media.
  • The media reminds about cases of repression against students who expressed support for Palestinians.
  • The US Department of State has not yet commented on these reports.

The Reuters agency refers to an internal US administration document to which the content has reached. It shows that the head of American diplomacy Marco Rubio announced the issue of updated guidelines for verification in social media of applicants for student visits, recommending US consulates to suspend meetings on studies.

“The Department reviews current operations and control processes and verification of people applying for a student and tourist visa (…) and on the basis of this review plans to issue guidelines regarding extended verification of social media for all applicants” – it was written in the document that Reuters reached.

New US migration policy

The US Department of State has not yet responded to the Reuters' request for comment. The agency estimates, however, that a new document is part of the new Washington immigration policy, aimed at intensifying deportation and reversing student visas. The Politico portal adds that previous talks with foreigners in this matter may be continued in accordance with applicable guidelines, however, consulates should not arrange new meetings.

Consulates have already been ordered to focus on services for American citizens, the process of issuing immigration visas and preventing fraud. Trump administration officials also associated with reversing visas and potential deportations with students' support for Palestinians or criticism of activities Israel in the Gaza Strip. They argued that such views threaten the foreign policy of the US and identified them with support for Hamas. According to critics, this is an attack on the right to freedom of speech, protected by the first amendment to the US Constitution.

Reuters cited the example of the Turkish student Tufts University, who was kept for over six weeks at the immigrant detention center. She was a co -author of the article criticizing the position of the university in the case conflict in the Gaza Strip. She was released after the federal judge allowed her to marry the deposit.

Donald Trump versus Harvard

“Administration has recently tried to undo the Harvard University the opportunity to accept foreign students, a group constituting about 27 percent of the total people educated there. This threatened the financial and academic situation of one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in a country that opposes the changes in government policy,” Reuters emphasized.
