According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, Gillis was a passenger in a car with three friends on Saturday night, looking for a friend’s house. As they parked in one of the driveways, they realized they were at the wrong address, so they wanted to drive away. Murphy noted that it’s easy to get lost in the area, and the four friends stayed in the driveway for only a short while without even getting out of the car.

“As they were leaving the property after realizing they were at the wrong house, the man went out onto his porch and fired two shots, one of which hit the vehicle Kaylin was in,” Murphy pointed out. He added that there was no coverage in the area, so the driver of the car had to keep going so that one of the passengers could notify the emergency services of the incident. These reached the injured Kaylin in the neighboring town of Salem, where the woman died after resuscitation.

Monahan, 65, the owner of the property, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Murphy said the man was uncooperative and refused to leave his home. He did not give officers any reason why he started shooting at the car.

Two days earlier, a 16-year-old boy had been shot

The American media recall that just two days before Gillis was shot, a similar situation occurred in Kansas City. On April 13, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot when he wanted to pick up his two brothers from their friend’s house but got the address wrongy. He is currently in the hospital in stable condition, but his injuries are life threatening. Andrew Lester, 84, was charged in the case.
